How to Stay Cool When Savannah Gets Hot

There’s no getting around it – summers are hot in Savannah! But with a little preparation, your sunshiny Savannah vacay can be a breeze.

Stay Hydrated

Hydration is the key to keeping healthy and cool all summer long, especially in our famous Savannah humidity. Be sure to start hydrating a couple of days before heading south to Savannah, and continue sipping water all day every day throughout your stay. Although water is the best beverage for hydration, iced herbal teas will also do the trick, and many of Savannah’s cafes carry a variety of flavors that will have you feeling refreshed in no time.

Cool Off in a Basement

Escape the city heat by going down below! Many people don’t know that Savannah is filled with basement lounges that serve up craft cocktails and small bites for sharing. The Ordinary Pub, Jazz’d Tapas Bar and Alleycat Lounge all provide comfortable (and cool!) atmospheres perfect for relaxing and cooling off.

Catch a Show

Savannah has a booming theater scene!

You can see anything from live musicals to charming plays to classic films on the big screen. The historic Savannah Theatre, located on the lovely Chippewa Square, has variety shows and worldwide musicals almost every day of the week.
If you’re more of a film buff, check out the showings at the Lucas Theater, a historic Savannah theater that often shows classic and cult favorite films.

Find a Shady Spot

Mother nature has gifted Savannah with an abundance of majestic oaks that offer shield from the sun! Head to a shady square, like Johnson Square or Lafayette Square, to relax and cool down beneath live oaks. Whitefield Square also has a lovely little gazeebo, perfect for cooling off and catching up on your summer reading.

Ice Cold Treats

Treat yourself to something tasty… and something ice cold! Savannah has no shortage of sweet shops that are perfect pit stops for an ice-cold treat. Take the whole family out for a cone at Leopold’s Ice Cream, an iconic Savannah ice cream parlor, or grab a frozen cocktail to-go as you sip and explore the city. Our recommendation? The Frose’ at Shuga Girl!

Break out the Hats and Shades

Keep the bright sun off your face by investing in a big hat and dark sunglasses. If you forgot to pack one of each, have no fear! Savannah is packed with adorable boutiques that can solve all of your summertime accessory needs. It’s the perfect excuse to do a little summertime shopping!
